4 stars (the doors of cognition !) - this book opens the doors of cognition ; in fact , when tiing a famous person ( ie : demora , luther king , kenwrinkel ) to notions of social psychology like ( social role , influence , aggression , etc ) , it allows our memory to widen , and teach a method to learn more and more easily ! that is , build couples : idea and picture ! this book uses cognition methods and invite us to study that field ! ... opening the doors of cognition ...teaches too , that very simple tools may have terrific and positive effects ! 5 stars (Social Psychology: Unraveling the Mystery) - The most valuable benefits of adopting this book for my class was the unbelievable support from the publisher. A&B provided a study guide, a test bank, a huge package of transparencies, a powerpoint presentation CD...--all of this for free. I have been astonished by the sevice and free benfits I have gotten as the result of choosing this otherwise excellent book. 1 stars (Only thoughts: WTF!!) - I helped teach three terms of upper division biochemistry with this book and this book is terrible!! Don't get this confused with the Stryer book (although he is listed as an author, the book IS NOT written in his style). For non-biochem people, get the real Stryer book and for biochem people get the Matthews or the Voet book. 1 stars (OMG! A how to manual for a badly written book) - I needed to purchase this book for my graduate class in biochemistry. I found it to be NOT user friendly in the least. Most books I have used for biochemistry come with a great set of definitions. This book not only doesn't come with an appendix with definitions but doesn't explicitely define words in the text. I finally found the "definitions" appendix at the only website (how nice of them...and how cheap can you get. Most books if they have a website also have definitions in the back). I should also mention it does not have a thorough index. Major subjects are neither defined nor shown in the index. Several times I had to go to either my organic chem book (Morrison & Boyd...great book), the Lippencotes (spelling) biochemistry review text (also a great concise book), or my under graduate biochemistry book (and study guide. Garrett and Grisham) to find information due to either the lack of information in this book or difficulty in finding it. Also, the layout of the book is terrible. Although proteins are now THE significant phase of biochemistry, the introduction of DNA and mRNA in later portions of the book is rediculous. If you follow the basic flow of genetic information from DNA to RNA to Protein it is much more easily understood. Throwing in the flow of genetic information at chapter 5 and later in chapter 27 discussing DNA replication, RNA synthesis and splicing (ch 28) and protein production (ch 29) makes no sense whatsoever. 5 stars (Finally, some plain English) - I've been a professional musician for 30 years, and now that the opportunity to record at home has become reality, I wanted to bring myself from total ignorance to at least a fundamental knowledge of the subject. I found this book to be the perfect answer to my needs. The authors explain things in plain English, put in enough detail for those who can absorb it, and remind the rest of us, "Don't let the math scare you, just get the idea." 3 stars (Good for beginners) - This is a good overview if you are new to the industry. Lack of detailed information limits its usability if you already have some experience. I would recommend Yamaha's Sound Reinforcement Handbook and Bobby Owsinski's Mixing and Mastering Engineer's handbooks over this for more specific tips. 5 stars (Information at your fingertips) - Modern Recording Techniques was the first of many books I have read in my study of Sound Design. Where this book does get a little complicated and at times the structure throws me off, this book is the best I have found so far. Similar books, such as the Yamaha Sound Reinforcement Handbook, read like instruction booklets that are so confusing that you are not sure if you are reading about a microphone or trying to put together a bookshelf. This book has stayed on my computer desk and by my side for the past year. Definitely worth the money! ...
