4 stars (Best photo editor in this price range but not worth upgrading from 3.0) - I read many reviews for software. I always read the worst reviews first and take what people say with a grain of salt. In reading reviews for Photoshop Elements, I see many people giving this program lackluster reviews. Not based on the software's capability, but based on its lack of additional features over previous installments or the program's speed. I hope to address what others have said and help you make a decision on whether to buy this program based on its attributes and your needs. Let me make it clear by saying that Elements is an excellent, if not the best photo editor in its price range. Although the price and features in this program may be more than the average person with a digital camera may need, I feel this program is an excellent choice for all types of users. Be advised, this program has a steeper learning curve than many other photo editors. In addition to that, expect to spend $30-$40 for a book to learn how to use many editing features in Elements if you are not already familiar with it. Adobe has included it's excellent Photo Organizer in Elements 3 & 4. What's important to realize is that the organizer is a nice way to keep track of and view all your photos, but it's not what you would want to use for quickly viewing an occasional photo here and there. (When I double click an image file I want it open within a second or two.) It takes approximately 10-15 seconds for the elements organizer to load on my laptop if it's not resident in the computers memory. (Longer or shorter based on computer's hardware of course, but probably not too much shorter.) This is why many people complain about the speed of the program and the reason I don't recommend associating elements with many of your image file types. 4 stars (NICE AND AFFORDABLE TOOL FOR HOBBYISTS) - For the non-professional artist and/or film-maker, this is as good as image-making gets. The combination of Photoshop Elements 4.0 and Premiere Elements 2.0 let you take your hobby to the very top without breaking the bank. Despite running much slower than the 3.0 edition, Photoshop Elements 4.0 has a number of new improvements going for it: particularly when it comes to enhancing and arranging images. Flexible range of manipulative features were included in this regard. Still, I was disappointed that Adobe decided to remove the useful file-browser feature, (which was present in the Photoshop Elements 3.0 edition). Also, Premiere Elements 2.0 is capable of handling any amateur video and audio assignment that you may want to assign to it, but be warned that it is memory-hungry. Running this video-editing application on any computer with less than 512MB of RAM may end-up testing your patience to the fullest. Unless your patience compares to that of the biblical Job, do consider it wise to upgrade your RAM (if it is less than 512MB). In terms of processor, any Pentium 4 (or its corresponding equivalent) will deliver a decent performance. The same applies to dual Pentium III equivalents. A single Pentium III processor (or its equivalent) is not the best option here! Finally, another good thing about this software bundle is that they support a wide range of digital photo cameras and video cameras. The learning curve for both Applications is not that steep. 5 stars (Big step-up from 2.0) - Just returned from a workshop at the Santa Fe Photo Workshop. Was amazed to learn how much more I can do with Elements 3.0 compared to 2.0. There was no difference in the class between the capabilities of my Elements 3.0 and the folks who were using Photoshop CS2; however, there were lots of things I would not have been able to do in 2.0. I am sure that for professional photographers, CS2 offers many advantages - but, as a "serious amateur", I am glad I didn't spring for the additional cost. I love the way you can move back and forth between the quick fix function and standard editing with just a click on buttons at the top of the screen. Having the adjustment sliders down the right side of the screen is very convenient - although that makes the photo workspace smaller. For the price, Elements 3.0 is top notch in my opinion. 3 stars (Amazing color-correction, but Windows users beware!) - I feel like an idiot for buying this software. This is a Macintosh application that has been ported to Windows with predictably confusing results. I was looking for an inexpensive alternative to the various photo editting tools I've acquired with different hardware peripherals. In the past I have relied on an old Adobe product that came with my HP scanner to do simple photo editting, but I was having trouble installing it on my Windows XP machine, and thought it was time to look for something more modern. A large part of this product suite is a photo organizer that is not as easy to use as Picasa, a free product available from Google. I have only begun to attempt to use the photo editting software on the JPEG files I have been scanning from slides. I must say that the "auto correction" operation, whatever it does exactly, seems really excellent. I am amazed at how well it corrects the color automatically: I have some slides I shot of the leaning tower of Pisa that were all overexposed, by (my) mistake, and are thus super-saturated with... You will need to purchase an entire Suite upgrade. You cannot upgrade only the Photoshop CS application within the Suite. But, Photoshop is a fantastic program that works more smoothly than the operating system underwhich it works. 5 stars (CS2 photoshop) - I have not have time to really work with it yet, but what I have worked with is awesome. 5 stars (It's worth the upgrade!) - I upgraded to the new Adobe Photoshop CS2 and found it was worth the money. The Bridge, takes the place of the old browser, is fantastic. The new vanishing point grid is cool. And if you're a photographer who uses RAW images this is the way to go. You are able to edit right in the Bridge without even opening Photoshop. I've only had my copy for a couple of weeks and already it's comfortable to use. The application gives you links to online tutorials. Very informative. 4 stars (Product good. Company bad.) - I'm an avid Photoshop user. I'm even a member of the NAPP. I use Adobe Photoshop every day in my work becuase it's great for everything from television produciton to web design to making your ex-girlfriend look like she has a huge nose. So I'm already a raving fan, and when CS2 was announced I was on it. Where I have a problem is with Adobe itself. First, when I recieved my upgrade I tried to install it but ran into a problem. It wouldn't accept my previous version, nor would it accept the serial number. A bit put out, I called Adobe. Here's where problem number two came in - they wouldn't even talk to me until I paid $40 for tech support! I'm a small business owner. If I treated my clients with this sort of contempt I'd be flipping burgers or selling blood to make a living. But what do you do when a faceless corporation initiates a policy designed to cut down their own costs for technical support by placing the burden on their own customers? The next slap in the face came when I finally got through to tech support. The reason my serial number wouldn't work was because I had been foolish enough to purchase the Adobe Creative Suite as a full package. 3 stars (Not _exactly_ true...) - Yes, Photoshop CS2 is a stellar product. But before you spend your money, visit the Adobe site and make sure the Upgrade will work with your version of Photoshop. 2 stars (Bridge & Camera Raw Plug-In don't work on my computer) - I love Photoshop, and have worked with all the previous versions, so I was very disappointed when I found that I could not get the Bridge to open or the Camera RAW plug-in to work on my Windows XP machine. I wasted hours and hours of my life on the phone to technical support, but they could not resuscitate this version on my computer. They never were able to tell me why I could not get these two key features to work. Without them, CS2 was virtually useless to me. My computer was only a little under 2 years old. Perhaps you will have better luck... 5 stars (A gift from the Digital Gods) - Photoshop is the king of its domain, every good artist, or anyone interested in photo manipulation, should not be without this.
