5 stars (A college text on Welding) - This is the book we used in a college-level welding course I took. It covers virtually every aspect of welding from oxy-fuel, stick, MIG, TIG, SMAW, cutting, basic metallurgy, brazing, welding certification requirements, etc. This text is very detailed and you can directly reference chapters on welding processes you're interested in doing without having to read the entire (very thick) book. It is an excellent reference and covers step-by-step how to safely setup and use all types of welding gear, how to lay correct beads, how to spot defects, proper weld preparation, safety, and lab exercises to test your skills. I own several books on welding and this one blows them all out of the water by a very wide margin. The price is college textbook high, but you get what you pay for with this volume. This is a very professional and well organized reference and should be on every welder's book shelf. The above review is for the fifth edition of this book. Older versions are around but you should purchase the latest edition to keep abreast of new welding practices and techniques. 5 stars (An Excellent, well-written and well organized text) - I have used an earlier edition and this edition in self-study of welding technology and as an aid in the development of my welding skills necessary for certifications. The text is exceptionally well organized and thorough. The material is comprehensive in explaining not only about the various welding technologies, but also in presenting the proper techniques and practices of welding, including great color pictures showing both good and bad practices. Every aspect of the welder's skill set is covered. Additionally, there are comprehensive end-of-chapter review questions, an excellent glossary, and a useful index, which perhaps could be beefed up somewhat. All in all, this was a very readable, worthwhile addition to my metal trades library . My money was well spent. ... 5 stars (Precious metal clay book) - This is a wonderful book. It came quickly and is a great price. I am always pleased with buying from Amazon. 5 stars (Great book to learn from) - I have recently been interested in polymer clay and when I found out that there was Metal Clay I was very excited. In hopes to find out more, I recently ordered Sherri Haab book as well as Precious Metal Clay in Mixed Media, by Mary Ann Devos. Sherri's book is a much better book for me as a beginner. I'm more of a visual learner and I do better with picture steps, which this book has. Very detailed written and pictured steps that help guide me through the projects. It includes creative uses of tools that can easily be found around the house or at a local thift store. She also shows detailed ideas of how to mix different mediums together. I feel like my projects will have more of a success rate do to this book. 5 stars (I LOVE this book!) - Great projects, great photography and easy to follow instructions. It's a perfect introduction to PMC, and will totally inspire you! ... 5 stars (jewelry rave) - This book is a must have for anyone who wants to create beauty with metals, but does not have safe access to a torch. I live in a condo, and had to find an available 'lab' whenever I wanted to complete a piece of jewelry. I have moved on to a new style of fabrication, and love it. 5 stars (An outstanding book on cold-connections.) - A cold connection = any connection made without heat. Joanna has put together a fantastic book that brings together many different cold connection techniques. I have yet to find another jewelry making book that covered as many cold techniques that this one does. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to enhance their jewelry making skills, but is not yet ready to move to the use of a torch for soldering. 5 stars (Great book for beginners!!) - This is an excellent book for beginners or those who are slightly more advanced in jewellery making. The jewellery in this book is made stricly with cold connections, no soldering or heating involved. For the more advanced, such as myself, I find this book great for inspiration to include cold connections in my designs. 5 stars (very good introduction) - The book has a lot of useful tips, tools, methods and so many other things. I am satisfied. Remember there is a version with some video orientation that is more expensive but could be useful if you dont have a teacher. 5 stars (Update Your Complete Metalsmith) - I've had and used McCreight's original "Complete Metalsmith" for years and wasn't sure I needed the new version. After owning it for several months now I couldn't be happier. The author assumes that the reader is as interested in WHY things happen as he is. This is not a step-by-step project book, but a bench tool. Do you need to know how to score metal to make a sharp corner? How can you tell when a piece of metal is annealed? Have you been bezel setting stones and are now ready to advance to a prong setting? Ready to make a hinge? Casting? Fusing? Repouss?#? Need to know what the Precious Metal Clay craze is about and how to start? It's all in here and the information is presented in a format made for the beginner or the experienced jeweler. He even covers how to photograph your work. I love that McCreight shows several ways of doing things so that if you don't have the equipment or tools, you can still proceed. In his typical style, the author has thought of everything. He's even made a smaller and less expensive version of the book for the "starving artists" and students among us. I have the version with the CD and use the software on my Palm regularly in my metalsmithing classes. This book is a worthy successor to the old version and should become as much a classic. 5 stars (Review of Complete Metalsmith Revised....) - It is with the highest recommendation that I encourage any metalsmith, be they beginner or advanced, to have this book on hand. It is chalk full to the brim with resourceful information, much of which can be used on a daily basis. 4 stars (Good Starter Book) - This book is a good start for those wanting to know more about metal fabrication. Author sells alot of the handtools he mentions in the book. Lots of good info. 5 stars (A first rate little book) - Ought to be must reading not only for car guys but aircraft maintenance students, homebuilders, and for electronics hobbyists as well. Even if you aren't going to become as skilled as Mr. Fournier it helps to know what can and can't be done and what is involved, so you can intelligently talk to fabricators. 4 stars (Great book for general information.) - This is an excelent book for anyone who wants to get started or just looking for general info on metal fabrication. However I have to agree with some of the previous posts regarding it's lack of specific details. The book offers readers a good deal of information on the tools of the trade and the basics of metal fabrication. It is a great reference to point you in the right direction but you will have to go elsewhere for the more specific information. ...
