5 stars (Good Read & Indsepensible) - I can't say how many times this book has come in handy. I am in the military stationed far from Mom and the rest of my family. It certainly saved on my long distance! 5 stars (Review by first time mom!) - I found this book to be especially useful in the first few months of my baby's birth. From my exprience these first few months can be quite daunting simply becasue everything is so new. The slightest thing is cause for concern and there were questions all the time. This book provided me answers to all of them. Like the sudden crying bouts in the evening which may not necessarily be attributed to colic (i knew this after reading the entire section on colic - which was an eye opener!) or the spit ups and what to make of them based on their texture. My daughter had blood in her [...] and her [...] were engorged after birth. Of course I thought the worst! The book explained why and that it was perfectly normal. Boy was I relieved! One night I awoke to find my 2 1/2 month old baby with a stuffed nose and having a hard time breathing. There were some excellent home remedies recommended in this book for such a situation. Of course at the the time I simply called my doctor. But I later found that the same solution offered by my doctor was in the home remedy section of the book. I promptly read all the home remedies suggested. There is also a wonderful section on breastfeeding, expressing milk, what kind of pump to buy etc. Baby's grandparents really wanted me to feed her water in case she was dehydrated. I needed only to refer them to the relevant page which tells you why it needen't be given. I found the bits on how to tell if baby is getting enough breastmilk to be most useful too. You can never tell especially if you're feeding on demand. Just to highlight how comprehensive this book is, it also had some great advice on how to deal with baby's well meaning but overbearing grandparents. There is also other basic information... 5 stars (For Women) - My husband wans't very interested in this particular book because he said "he already knew everything he needs to know". I think I should have bought a more fairytale type book as I think it makes him nervous to hear about anything that can go wrong with his first baby! 5 stars (Wonderful for first time moms-to-be!) - This is an excellent reference for first time moms-to-be, chock full of scientific explanations and situational questions that cover all the bases. And it is the only book my OB recommended! 5 stars (The Mommy Bible) - This is a WONDERFUL book! My husband got it for me with our first baby, and what a life saver it was. I brought it with me wherever I went. Anytime I felt anything strange, I would look it up in this book and there was my answer. Now we are expecting our second baby and I'm using it again. It's a great book for rookie parents or experienced ones. I highley recommend it. It's also great if the hubbies read it, they get to know what we are going through better and can help us along the way. ... 4 stars (the truth about cats and dogs) - workman has another success for animal lovers and those who just like to mock stupid dogs---essentially the entire population of literate people can appreciate the humour of these images. better than Bad Cat! 3 stars (Liked Fixed Mix Seeks Same better! ) - Although I enjoyed flipping thru this book, my favorite book of this genre is Fixed Mix Seeks Same, which is personal ads "written" by dogs. Not only does Fixed Mix... have superior photos, it's really a fun read. Overall, I say the more dog books the better! 5 stars (Thurber-worthy) - Ridiculous and wonderful. Silly dogs of all shapes and sizes...don't leave it out on the table if you don't want to be giggling all day. ... 4 stars (THE Knitting Book) - I've been knitting on and off for about 5 years, not including the various times my mom tried to teach me. I love to look at knitting patterns and wish I could knit more than just a scarf. This book has been a great help so far. I'm comfortable with the common "knit & purl" techniques but anything after that, I get a little intimidated. This book breaks it down and shows you, with illustrations, just how to make those tricky stitches. With other patterns I've seen they have a difficulty scale and that's my only complaint with this book. I'd like to knit a few of the sweaters in the book but I don't know if I'd be way over my head or not. Other than that, I think it's a great book for anyone who is interested in learning to knit or even current knitters looking for some new, funky patterns. It would make a great gift! 5 stars (Fantastic 'how to' guide!) - I rate myself as an intermediate knitter yet there were still things I learnt from reading the technical parts of this book! Her style is easy to read and follow. 3 stars (A Beginner's Perspective) - This book is great for teaching basic skills--the instructional section is detailed and fun to read. It actually has some of the best beginner instructions of any book I've tried (and I went through a lot of them because I had no one to show me even the basics). It's also great at capturing the hipness and fun of the knitting revival. My only reservation is the patterns. I feel they jump from the beginner's scarf to intermediate stuff with very little in between. There's not a lot for the true beginner to practice on to gain the confidence to tackle some of the more advanced projects. As far as the selection of patterns, about half are cool, edgy stuff that I would love to try, and the other half look way too homemade. I would give it 3 1/2 stars: very glad I tried it, but also glad I didn't buy it. (However, there is a glorious poncho in there that I vow to make some da... 5 stars (I DID NOT LIKE THE COVER UNTIL...) - When I first saw the book I found it UGLY. Since I am a cat lover I looked inside just to find out why on earth anybody would make such a bad cover. Thank God I did look inside! - The book is simply hilarious! I bought the book and took it home for further amusement. After going through the whole book I also learned to appreciate the cover. I have to compliment the author for a brilliant idea! By the way, my boyfriend, who is NOT a cat lover and used to dislike my two pets with passion, seems to have changed his attitude towards my cats after having a lot of fun with "Bad Cat". What's even more interesting, he gave me for my birthday another book with a BEAUTIFUL cover, titled "Why Some Cats are Rascals". Yet another great book! It is meant as children's book, but I had a lot of fun reading it together with my boyfriend. I think he is on the edge of getting one "Rascal" for himself, although he does not admit that yet... 5 stars (A gripping tour-de-force) - I laughed so hard I was crying. Seriously. Jim Edgar is a comic treasure. I eagerly await Bad Cat 2. 5 stars (Couldn't be any funnier!) - Bought this book and howled all night - the cats in it are just hilarious. Between the photos of cats gone bad and the captions that absolutely capture what we humans think the cat MUST be thinking, you'll thoroughly enjoy this book. Now, whenever I've had a rotten day at work, I simply pull out my "bad cats" and feel better almost instantly! A side note: I recently bought the "Bad Cats Calendar" for 2006 - it contains even more than the book - can't wait until January 1 when I can put it on my desk at work! ... 5 stars (Outsiders no more) - Unique and intriquing look at statistical analysis of the game of Football. Their statistics are gaining more and more recognition and deservedly so. I must have for football and fantasy fans everywhere. 4 stars (Good stuff) - The predicted stats seem a little low, but they're all low so it's still a good point of comparison. I think the custom stats are ok, analyzing football stats like baseball stats still has a way to go but this is a good starting spot. Not perfect but well worth the price. More info than a half dozen fantasy magazines, nowhere near the cost. 5 stars (If you like the NFL, you will love this book.) - Although I sometimes get bogged down with the statistical analysis in the book, once all the number crunching is done and the authors get down to discussing what they've discovered based on their analysis, it all makes sense and really makes this an oustanding book. This is a book you will read through once and then constantly refer back to during the season. Where the predictions correct? Does this team stuff the ball at the line of scrimmage like they said? Can this team convert crucial 3rd downs? All these topics are covered. GET THIS BOOK NOW! ... 5 stars (Weigh loss made easy) - I am a member of Weight Watchers since January 1979. I lost weight and kept it off until 1993 when I had my last child. I kept all the weight I gained during this last pregnancy. I was at 200 lbs and am 5'5" tall. This same weight stayed with me until 2003. I was going through menopause so I began HRT (hormone replacement therapy). Being older my metabolism really slowed down, so I added more weight to my body. I got to 223 lbs and I began to panic, since both my sisters are Type 2 diabetics and are morbidly obese. My own BMI is over 30. I am on medication for HBP and recently was diagnosed with diabetis too. My regiment is diet and exercise and glucose monitoring once a day. Since I am a weight watcher, I began my program to lose my weight again. I kept a food journal and added walking 2 miles 4 days a week to my regiment. I was losing weight the healthy way (1 - 2 lbs a week), but after 4 months, my weight just stayed the same. I would lose 2 lbs and the next week gain them back. This cycle continued for about 6 weeks. I had already purchased the G.I. Diet but never read it. Imagine that... but when I decided to give this book a try, I was impressed so much by Mr. Gallop's writing and how it seemed that he was speaking to me and my way of life. I decided to try it, after all I am a lifetime member of weight watchers what could it hurt. After being on this diet for 2 weeks, I lost over 3.5 lbs. My energy level is up and my mind is focused. I cannot believe how clear my mental well being is now that I am following this food plan. I love it and highly recommended this to both my sisters. I will update later as I am so excited about these changes in my well being. 5 stars (the G.I. diet is where it's at) - I purchased this book for my dad (he's a diabetic) because it focuses on pursuing a low-sugar diet. I've read a lot on nutrition and after finding out how much of an impact refined sugars have on our bodi...
