3 stars (its a math book) - not gonna do back flips for a math book 5 stars (Pleasently Surprised) - I am a college student and the math book that was at the bookstore was $100.00. I went onto amazon.com and found the same book in new condition (looked like)for $56.00. I was kind of weary about ordering on-line for the first time but was pleasently surprised. This was a great first experience and plan on ording all my books through amazon.com. 5 stars (Fun mathematical Ideas) - "Ideas" is the key here as we have calculators, computers, and what not to do any real number crunching or comparing. This book carries you from zero to the edges of most any mathematical discipline. The information in the margins ties the theories back to reality. At the appropriate locations in the margin are postage stamps from around the works are shown commemorating the individual mathematicians and scientists relating to the subject being studied. There is a section in the book with the answers to all the odd questions. ... 3 stars (Do you know Latin?) - Hodge's work is one of the great reformed theologies ever done. For myself, though, I feel like I missed out on much of it because I don't read Latin! There are too many passages that are written in Latin and then expounded in English. If you don't read Latin, I would recommend "Great Doctrines of the Bible," by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, or " Systematic Theology ," by Loius Berkhof. 4 stars (Note Latin is deleted not translated) - Note that the long latin quotations in the original book have simply been deleted, not translated. Still worthwhile even if many sections go over the head of the average reader--many other sections are accessible and made me exclaim "he is the Reformed C. S. Lewis". 1 stars (Abridged? Decimated!) - Anyone wanting to read Hodge, should go with the three volume edition. Yes, there is far too much interaction with the pseudo-science of the day, but this "abridgement" lays waste to whole areas of interest to anyone who would want to read Hodge in the first place. It's interesting that one of the areas where the cutting is most obvious is in the area where the "editor" disagrees with Hodge the most, that is the locus of "eschatology". The editor is a Premillennialist and Hodge, like all Princetonians was a clear Postmillennialist. If you want to read Hodge without the excess verbiage, buy A.A Hodge's "Outlines of Theology", which is based on the very same lectures that Charles Hodge published as his Systematics. It's simpler, yet doesn't alter the truth the way this chopped-up mess does. This abridgement is a master maligned. ... 3 stars (Too basic and the title is really a misnomer) - Given the promise of the book's title, I was disappointed. "The Financial Numbers Game" is really alomst a misnomer as the book spends many pages on explanations of basic accounting principles - much like an introductory textbook - and then discussed some of the more obvious creative accounting practices. What you do get from this textbook is an overall solid overview of basic GAAP, with a large number of real world examples (which is good). What you don't get is real insight into some of the more interesting ways companies use to manage earnings and their balance sheet. For example, I could not find anything on special purpose entities, off balance sheet financing, dirty surplus accounting, a meaningful discussion of EBITDA beyond the basics, and anything beyond the obvious, really. I also thought the discussion of receivable days was problematic (chapter eight). This may go into too much detail but the authors calculate this ratio based on the ending balance of accounts receivable rather than some average (eg, beginning and ending balance if nothing else is at hand). This actually distorts the ratio and results in an incorrect analysis of the development of receivables where they change between periods. This is not good for two academics. As previous reviewers pointed out, the book has too many repetitions which a good editor should have caught. I like the solid accounting overview and the multitude of examples the text provides and that merits three stars. If you are an MBA student who is interested in an accounting refresher, this may be a book for you. If on the other hand you are a professional analyst or investor - what the authors call serious readers of financial statements in their preface - then this will disappoint you. 5 stars (Highly Recommended!) - A special note in the preface of this book explains that it went to press just as the Enron story was beginning to break. 5 stars (Simply the best book on the subject.) - Messers Mulford and Comiskey have released a primer on what has lately become a messy subject. Unlike other books with a focus on cash--Hackel's book, for example--this one delves a little bit deeper into the subject of financial misreporting. The reader is given a synopsis of how companies say that their cash is operating, whereas it ought to be put under financing or investing cash flow. There is a multitude of similarly constructed arguments. The examples are lucid, apropos, and contemporary. The book also has a deterministic model for calculating CFFO. Read it. 5 stars (Mulford's methodology shows why Cash is King) - Over several years of using and preparing the GAAP-based cash flow statement in analysis, I have found it isn't that useful in enabling me to drill down to understand where a company's real operating cash flow comes from. Mulford's methodology does an excellent job focusing on interim period cash flow information to enable the reader to better spot positive and negative trends in an operating company's performance. I found Creative Cash Flow Reporting to be a most useful treatise on what's wrong with the cash flow statement and how to work around its problems. In " The Second Coming of Charles Darwin " we meet a automatonic galapogos tortoise who is sent back in time with a vengeant man wanting to right the moral wrings of the future by preventing what he feels is the root of all moral wrongs, the theory of evolution. A fantastic short story sewn together with Jim's always welcome satire. 5 stars (Horsemanship's finest) - Clinton Anderson is one of the finest, most interesting trainers of horses and people that I have encountered. He is clear, concise and very funny. 5 stars (An easy-to-follow manual for horse training) - This is a great book that helps horse lovers deal with difficult horses. By going through a series of lessons with both an English and western rider, the reader understands the process via several points of view. Each horse and rider in the book has its own unique problems, and Anderson deals with each problem clearly and methodically. Its filled with colorful photographs and excellent illustrations. 5 stars (If you only buy one book on horse training, this is it) - It provides specific suggestions on how to work with your horse and what results you can expect. It addresses problems and provides detailed solutions in an easy to understand format. Adding the experiences of the two students in the book was a brilliant idea and helps the reader relate to the experiences in the book. 4 stars (Very Good Content -- Very Poor Binding) - This book contained what I thought was very good information. It was presented in a clear, concise manner, but a little too brief in some instances. The binding however was so poor that the book completely fell apart before I got through with Chapter 2. The rating is solely for content, not construction. 5 stars (The book to have, for beginers+++) - I am a fairly new boat owner with a twenty-four foot inboard. Kudos for Mr. Low in writing a fun, easy to understand book which helped me understand the dinamics at work when you are on the water. This book helped me in to this new journey, with practical advice. It is for the beginer, but comes with ideas and processes that one needs to understand, and remember, even when experienced. Thank you Mr. Low for being there with a great introduction to boat handling, and for keeping it simple to understand. Other books I have purchased get too wordy and use trade terminoligy that I sometimes don't understand. 1 stars (Incredibly useless) - I feel sorry for anybody who relies on this book to get a good handle on physics. I am an A student, but I am spending obscene amounts of time trying to comprehend the material. This book (and the accompanying solutions manual) do a lousy job of walking you through the steps to solve many of the problems. The one I am particularly frustrated with is Interactive Example 3.7 (page 66), which tells you at one point to solve for time by using the quadratic formula. They do not bother to show you how they got the answer! The appendix to which it refers you for this particular example, is seriously not helpful. I am spending upwards of 25 hours per WEEKEND studying for physics, and this text does NOTHING to elucidate any of the concepts. I cannot wait to give my input to the department at the end of the semester. 1 stars (Warning) - Do not purchase. The company advertises that the price includes free website access. Once you purchase the book, the company responds by asking a list of personal questions when you attempt to access their site. The book includes an access code but no password. They refuse to give a passcode until you have answered personal questions.What if you dont want your personal info in someones database? Thats too bad. Apparently the web site / software isn't quite free once you have purchased the book. Boycott this book until they stop asking personal questions that are none of their business. Their excuse is that they need this info to list a student in their database. Do you really think college students should be bullied into giving up personal data? If sales falls off, perhaps they can figure out how to create a unique number in each book so that account numbers are unique. This would mean all a student would need to do would be to choose a unique password and sign on the web site.
