A Hidden Wholeness - The Journey Toward an Undivided Life

5 stars (A book for everyman) - By everyman I mean, of course, men and women, young and old, retired and working, republicans and democrats, believers and non-believers. This is a book I wish I'd found years ago (before it was written)! Almost everyone lives the divided life. (I suspect the Dalai Lama does not). As Palmer notes, sometimes we have to -- this is a choice we sometimes must choose to make. One of the reasons I love this book so is that Palmer does not have rigid judgmental expectations of us (we probably are harsh enough on ourselves). He offers guidelines and explanations for the human condition, and some help on getting through. Parker Palmer takes a long time Quaker practice -- the Clearness Committee - and uses it to provide for everyone a Circle of Trust. This mutual support network is unusual -- it isn't an advisory committee but more support for listening to that inner voice which we may joke about, but which exists (you know, the one you should have listened to, that nagging feeling, that annoying little warning sign). One thing that makes us crazy is the denial of that inner voice, our true self, the divided side of self that knows the questionable aspects of our work life, the one we hush up so we can get by and make a living. This isn't just a teacher's issue or a spiritual issue. For some it may be a spiritual divide; for others, a more humanistic one. In any case, we become emotionally, mentally and otherwise unbalanced if our day to day movements and choices feel separate from -- or in conflict with -- our beliefs and values, and yet we deny that they are so. We do not allow ourselves to hear that inner voice, afraid of the changes we might have to make. We smush it down, despite knowing intellectually that anything you smush down in one area pops up in another. This book offers recognition of this conflict we are in, and gives us ways we can listen without, necessarily, having to make changes that will make us walk ou...

The Leadership Pipeline- How to Build the Leadership Powered Company

1 stars (A "clone" book of ideas and no reference to others) - Reading this 'leadership pipeline' I became really astonished of seeing here all the ideas of Elliott Jaques and Gillian Stamp (Bioss International) just copied with no reference to them. I keep wondering how can that be done. Jaques and Gillian Stamp has written for so many years about human capability and seven levels of work complexity that are clearly repeated in this book withouth no comment to them. Even the general themes are there, for example managing other, leader of leader, managing a business unit, managing a group of business unit. If you don't beleive me, just read Requisite Organization (Jaques) and previous ones, for example, and you will learn that Jaques' ideas are being developed for more than 30 years. So, better learn with the real creative people that has really done researches around the theme. 5 stars (Great read for both leaders and HR/development folks) - A real inside look at leadership development from the folks who built GE's system. For leaders, there is insight from experienced executive coaches about what value each of the different levels of leadership brings to an organization and where leaders moving into each level often get stuck. Great to read when you are making a transition or for ideas on how to help those who work for you. For HR and development folks, there are many concrete examples--how performance standards are defined, what the rating system for potential is, etc. that let you see what each piece of the GE system really looks like. 5 stars (Book that builds leadership!) - This book explains how important it is to have a leadership powered company. Another book I have come in contact with is "The Wal-Mary Way" where this book is designed as an inspiration to managers of all companies. ...

Health Behavior and Health Education - Theory- Research- and Practice

4 stars (A classic in the field of health education theory) - This revised edition of the classic work by Glanz et al. demonstrates the benefits of poignant insight into the classic psychosocial and behavioral theories and how they relate to the field of public health and health education. Glanz leads the reader through most all of the major theories that apply to designing a public health intervention. In many of the chapters dedicated to individual theories, she includes extensive case studies of the practical implications of the theoretical work described within the main body of each chapter. Along with the other authors of this extensive compilation of classic health behavior and health education literature, Glanz develops within the reader a cohesive and fundamental understanding of theoretical approaches in order to make a successful, calculated, relevant, and effective public health education intervention. Simply glancing through the pages contained within Glanz's masterwork tells the reader of the depth and breadth of the field that she covers in compiling this work. The theories are diverse and the approaches taken by each author equally diverse. Glanz nevertheless manages to accomplish the improbable and weave together an outstanding work encompassing all of these models and theories. For the public health professional, student, physician, or educator, Glanz's classic text on health behavior is essential for a simple, yet detailed understanding of all aspects of health behavior. 2 stars (Health Behavior and Health Education: Theory, Research, and) - As I waded through this textbook I at first felt that I had selected the wrong book for my teaching needs. The book is generally a review of current literature in the field of Health that would be an excellent resource for a graduate student who is about to tackle their thesis or dissertation. Contained within the chapters of this book is an extensive overview of what already exists in the field and certainly...

The Leadership Challenge- 3rd Edition

5 stars (Great Leadership Guide) - This is an excellent read for any executive in any discipline. From software to pharma, this book has great hands on information on how to lead your organization to its greatest potential. 5 stars (Good book) - Very thorough book - goes through the practices and commitments thoroughly and provides good examples. 5 stars (An inspirational and practical handbook) - There are dozens of outstanding books on leadership and this is one of the best. With clarity and insight, Kouzes and Posner zero in on the basics: five fundamental practices of leadership, ten commitments these practices embody, and the day-to-day action steps each commitment entails. The book also includes dozens of case studies that illuminate these concepts in real world action. "...probably the best book I've ever seen on leadership. The authors do a great job at differentiating leaders and managers. I highly recommend it to people who are interested in becoming leaders!!!..." "....For leaders who have been in that vocation for some time, this book serves as a refresher...." ...

The Present Future- Six Tough Questions for the Church

5 stars (Excellent resource) - McNeal continues the dialogue started by Leonard Sweet. McNeal however does it in a much more practical and accessible way. Recommend highly to anyone seeking to do church for the culture we are just now beginning to realize. 5 stars (Risky, but worth it) - Reggie McNeal offers a powerful alternative to the present-day church culture's Phariseeical worldview. Rather than trying to build the perfect church, as many churches do these days, McNeal advocates working to build the Kingdom of God by reaching people where they live/work/think. For people who are tied to the church culture as the way to reach God, this book will inspire resistance. But Jesus did not say, "The Church is the way, the truth, and the life", He said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life." Those who read this book are challenged to build God's kingdom by exiting the church box to reach those who would never set foot inside a church on their own. 5 stars (Frustratingly Enlightening - and Life Changing!) - Take a new look at all you do in at church, through the lens that Reggie McNeal provides. I've been trying to 'see' this way sincde reading The Present Future for the second time. It is frustrating to realize how church/club-oriented we are. Our structure and traditions are designed to meet the needs of the church (club) and not the needs of individuals. Now, we try to consider FIRST how we're impacting our community with the mission of Jesus, and how people's lives are being transformed; then consider how it affects the church. If we can make the transition, God will use us more effectively. ...

The Minds of Boys - Saving Our Sons From Falling Behind in School and Life

5 stars (Good Book!) - I read this and it gives great alternatives for boys that are having a hard time in school. I definetly recommend it! 5 stars (The Boys' Educational Crisis) - Gurian and Stevens use scientific research to diagnose what every alert parent and educator has been thinking for over a century--boys' brains and bodies were NOT made for the modern western educational system. Our system forces boys to be taught in sedentary settings, using learning styles unfit for their masculine minds. Gurian and Stevens begin by documenting the boys' crisis in education. Such research, though not novel, when pulled together like this, rattles our cages enough to gain and keep our attention. However, the true strength of "The Minds of Boys" is its thorough, detailed, specific, field-tested solutions. In area after area, "Saving Our Sons from Falling Behind in School and Life" empowers parents to equip their sons to overcome the many obstacles that they face in the school setting. One can only hope that educators themselves will read and heed the advice of Gurian and Stevens. If they do, then the next hundred years could produce a much more boy-friendly educational system. Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of "Soul Physicians," "Spiritual Friends," and the forthcoming, "Beyond the Suffering." 5 stars (great book) - I brought this book as a parent, because i have a young child who is entering public school for the first time and i want to be sure thatbi can help him in any way possible. i found the book very informative and well written. ...

The Story We Find Ourselves In- Further Adventures of a New Kind of Christian

5 stars (Read It for Yourself) - After reading The Story We Find Ourselves In, I walk away feeling that most, if not all, the reviews I read concerning it (whether in favor or against) were strangely beside the point. I encourage you to read it for yourself (starting with the Preface). It seems strange to me that folks would defend so vehemently their interpretations (whatever they are-in agreement with the character Neo or not) of this story that every human finds himself/herself in: as if it's our interpretations of life that gives life meaning or significance. It would seem to me that the most basic significance of our story is that it exists before, above and beyond any one of us individually, though we find ourselves inextricably a part of it. In the face of anything that is so indisputably greater than one's self-such as LIFE-it makes more sense to me to seek meaning from that thing than to think that one's undeniably limited perceptions of the thing can somehow add meaning it. The former is all I see McLaren doing in a most respectful way. And it is my humble opinion that in most instances McLaren's search is for the better. For those to whom it matters, McLaren's writing is substantive and full of latent meaning. The title itself, in its lack of grammatical convention, strikingly suggests that by exploring "the story we find ourselves in" we simultaneously find both personal context and meaning. Though narrative, the vehicle of choice for McLaren is almost exclusively dialogue which may take some getting use to for some, but there's nothing wrong with that. Of course the quality of his use of the narrative form could be critiqued-doesn't education teach us that all things can be improved-but such critique would be better reserved for a truly artistic work of fiction. McLaren's work is more along the lines of "creative nonfiction" (a more accurate categorization that a reader of the first book in this series gave him). Besides I get the impressi...

The Courage to Teach - Exploring the Inner Landscape of a Teacher-s Life

2 stars (Not typical style) - I have heard many speak highly of the book, but I just don't get it. There is passion in his style and his delivery encouraging teachers to maintain integrity, to stay true to themselves, and so forth. I guess that I lose interest due to the verbose language used. There are many aspects to teaching, and it is a lot of work; I am not equating this aspect to success or failure for connection with the students. As I said, many that I have spoken to enjoy it... I don't. 5 stars (The Courage to Teach - Palmer) - The book was in excellent condition. The box was partially opened, but the product unharmed. Audrey 4 stars (for any educator at any grade level!) - I read this for a graduate school assignment. It is a good book. Parker believes that classrooms should be subject-centered, not student-centered. It is very interesting why he states this. I actually liked the book the second time I read it. He goes on about not losing your identity while you teach and about not copying techniques that are not true to yourself. He gives a lot of insightful information. I recommend it to anyone in the field of education. I actually think I appreciated it more due to the fact that I have teaching experience. ...

Let Your Life Speak- Listening for the Voice of Vocation

5 stars (Discernment for "part two" of life) - Our women's circle is studying this book together. We are middle-aged and over but are looking at a time of growth in this next part of our life-journey. The book is helping us to let our lives speak to each other and to ourselves. 5 stars ("Ask me whether what I have done is my life." (1)) - I got this book some time ago, when one of the professors at BC recommended it to me as a way to think about what I wanted to do with my life and of course, I never read it. However, I'm almost glad that I didn't read it until now, because at this point in my life I think I needed it more than I did when I was choosing a path. Palmer is basically telling his own story of vocation, including all the dark spots that he hit along the way. However, he emphasizes the need to see the good and the possibilities for growth in those dark spots. For example, in the final chapter he compares life to the changing seasons in an extended metaphor. For winter, he says, "Despite all appearances, of course, nature is not dead in winter--it has gone underground to renew itself and prepare for spring. Winter is a time when we are admonished, and even inclined, to do the same for ourselves" (101). His main point is that in order to do this (renew ourselves for growth in our vocation), each person should learn to listen to their inner self because that is the only way that we will truly become the full person that God created us to be. He does frequently refer to religious ideas like this but, the nice thing about his writing is even though he is religious, this idea does not overwhelm the book and it can really be for anyone (though I'm sure that an atheist might not get as much out of this as a religious person would). This book helped me to look at my life and see if I could discover what my "inner self" has been trying to tell me, even in times of my darkness and "winter", about my vocation. 5 stars (Palmer is the Real Deal) - I generally make not...

Leading from the Second Chair - Serving Your Church- Fulfilling Your Role- and Realizing Your Dreams

5 stars (A Great Read) - "Leading from the Second Chair" is a very well-written book that flows easily, packed with applicable advice and illustrations. When I decided to read this book, I was expecting it to focus solely on leadership issues within the church. However, as I read through it, I kept applying the sound leadership lessons to my secular job! Very simply, I could not put down "Leading from the Second Chair." As all of us answer to an ultimate "first chair," most of us also answer to or work for someone else. Good, practical tips on how to blossom and be content as an effective leader in a subordinate role is what this book is all about. I think anyone who decides to read "Leading from the Second Chair" will be glad they did! ...

A New Kind of Christian- A Tale of Two Friends on a Spiritual Journey

5 stars (WHAT IF CHRISTIANITY IS THE MOST DANGEROUS THING TO CHRIST??? ) - Christianity Today called A NEW KIND OF CHRISTIAN the most dangerous book this year to Christianity. This may be true, but what if Christianity is the most dangerous thing to Christ??? McLaren's book points toward a real and honest relationship with Christ like no other book I've read. It is culturally relevant without contradicting the Word of God. It IS challenging, but that is a good thing. It is a GOOD thing when someone makes you think outside the box. You don't have to be threatened by that or agree with what they said. Many of the reviews I've read about this book communicate fear, but NOTHING that McLaren said contradicted Christ's life and teachings. If we look at Christ, we will see that it was the RELIGIOUS PEOPLE he was constantly rebuking during his ministry. RELIGION is one of the most threatening things to Christ. McLaren encourages his readers to look to scripture and try looking past the self-serving institution we have created and given the name of "church". "Church" is not supposed to be the country club we've created it to be but a body of believers, seeking Christ. Read the book and genuinely ask Christ to help you discern McLaren's words. If it is not of God, He will give you the wisdom and protection from that. 5 stars (Thought provoking and honest...) - This is a great beginner read to bring in new ideas and theology that will help people who are struggling with how their faith is not only relevant, but also authentic and Christian in the postmodern world. This is an awesome book. 1 stars (A Familiar Kind of Heretic) - King Solomon told us in the Book of Ecclesiastes that there "Is nothing new under the sun." When we reach a time of spiritual crisis, like Brian McLaren's pastor, Dan did in this book, we can react in a number of ways. As Christians we should go back to our roots, to the Creator God, to Jesus, to His words in the Bible, to the people who love us. Or...

Bass Method 1

5 stars (Great software) - I'm in my 40's and was able to pick up my father's 30 year old electric bass and learn how to play very quickly. I've been using the program about 3 months and try to play 1/2 to 1 hour every day. Besides learning the songs included in the program I have been able to play Cream songs Badge and Sunshine of Your Love by teaching myself. As for the details: 1. There is no problem with XP. I have a desktop and a laptop and both run the program without any problems 2. Tuner works great and is very very helpful 3. The program records your playing whenever you want. It is easy to use 4. When playing songs you can turn off the bass line in the song, leave the bass line in, or just play the bass line without the music 5. Moving between lessons is painless and very easy I can't say enough about this software. It's great and I am only on lesson 43. You won't be disappointed with the software. It's a good investment and you will be very happy with the results 5 stars (No more beginner's books! ** WORKS WITH THE MAC! **) - Forget beginner's books! Save your money and buy this program, the ability to play along with the computer while you watch the notes/chord progression alone is something that no book/ audio cd will ever match. The way the lessons are presented is excellent, giving visual types like me direct re-enforcement on what the lesson is all about by giving you follow-along examples, and most importantly encouraging you to improvise and experiment. I've been learning the bass on and off for a couple of years and while I can already play along with many songs and improvise a bit I have found even the most basic lessons in this program to be very useful. I'm really looking forward to the sight reading section of the course! Highly recommended! If #2 is ever issued I'll buy it! 5 stars (Finally a CD-ROM for bass!) - My friend really liked eMedia's guitar CD-ROM, so I got their Bass Method the second I saw it at Circuit City. The lesso...

The metronome and tuner would not work, and the menus had extraneous symbols. None of these were a killer, but a bit annoying. Then I switched to my old computer running Windows 98, and everything worked fine. For the program itself, it's great! There is video of the instructor (sometimes with a split view to show both hands), songs to play along with, an animated fretboard, audio clips with more suggestions or reminders, a guitar chord dictionary, and the aforementioned tuner and metronome. Portions of the music can be selected to repeat, to aid practice. The songs include the voice and guitar parts. A very good program for a beginner bassist. ...

Overcoming the Five Dysfunctions of a Team- A Field Guide for Leaders- Managers- and Facilitators

5 stars (Phenomenal System!) - After reading the book, you just want to jump in there and start implementing the techniques described, but having the field guide makes it truly an easily understandable concept to implementation process. Now we need field guides for the other three books! 5 stars (Following Up His BestSeller) - A couple of years ago Mr. Lencioni published a book on the Five Dysfunctions of a Team. In it he listed the problems that if allowed to continue would destroy a teams effectiveness, and quite possibly destroy the team itself. As a result of questions and comments from readers he has produced this guide to specifically address how to overcome these dysfunctions. The particular points beind addressed include: Building Trust Mastering Conflict Achieving Commitment Embracing Accountability Focusing on Results. Each of these points is discussed with a view towards increasing the functionality of the team. This is followed by questions and comments from participants in classes and seminars and finally by some exercises in helping to build the team. ...
