5 stars (Well Done!) - This book is the best of it's kind. It is simple and to the point. It's going to change the way I approach shopping for clothes. Stacy and Clinton work to make people look good no matter what their shape or weight or height or figure flaws. When I saw some of the pictures of people (in their underwear) I thought, "No way are they going to make this person look good!" But I was wrong every single time. The people look good. They look together. It made me feel good just to see the change. What I think Stacy and Clinton are about is that they want people to feel good about their bodies no matter what(or where) their problem areas are. What they show us in this book is that we all really can have our "outsides" match our "insides." 5 stars (Stacy and Clinton Don't Disappoint) - I was thrilled to see the American hosts of What Not To Wear co authored a book. The show is fabulous and the book lives up to that standard. First, the book helps you identify your body type not by using some fruit or obscure geometric shape but real world identifiers. The guidelines they use are so simple they make sense for those of us not so handy with a tape measure. Also, the book does not assume every one who is petite is a size 6. Guidelines are given for a variety of shapes, sizes and heights. It also shows you how to dress for work, play and formal occasions. My absolute favorite part is the pictures in the back of the book that show and tell (some fashion books assume you know what a bolero jacket looks like). No assumptions are made here this book provides pictures for everything the authors talk about or recommend which to me makes perfect sense. Fashion is so visual and at last there is a fashion book with actual pictures of real people wearing the right clothes instead of 3 or 4 cartoon drawings that supposedly represent human body shapes or pictures of the same two people who supposedly represent every figure flaw or asset. 5 stars (ON GRIEF AND GRIEVING) - A profoundly wise, helpful and comforting book -- a magnificent achievement -- The best book I have read on the subject of loss. ON GRIEF AND GRIEVING provided greater understanding and meaning at an especially difficult time. This is a heartfelt rave and sincere recommendation. 5 stars (Excellent Book) - Elisabeth Kubler-Ross and David Kessler do an excellent job of taking a very difficult subject and breaking it down into its component parts. This book has been giving me a better understanding of what grief is, why we must go through it, how to do it, what is healthy, and what is not. This book will be on my list to give to close friends and family members when they go through a loss of a loved one. I cannot praise this book enough. All I can say is that I am very grateful that somebody wrote it and did an excellent job at that. 5 stars (THE PERFECT GIFT FOR DIFFICULT TIMES) - I have never known what to do when someone I care about has do deal with the unfortunate reality of death. Sending flowers that will die in a few days doesn't feel right. And they often have flowers from the funeral anyway. This book is so tenderly written and so easy to read that it makes the perfect gift when a card is too little for a family member, friend or co-worker you care about. ... 5 stars (Sometimes, it is in the mind) - Having tried sports medicine, MRI, and anti-inflamation drugs, I finally began to read Dr. Sarno's book and within days started to feel relief from constant back pain and sciatica. What drew me in was Sarno's understanding of not only what I was going through but also all of the advice I had to that point been given by my doctors. His theory of how the brain mistakenly deprives oxygen seems very valid to me since 6 weeks later I was virtually pain-free. Sometimes back pain is caused by physical defects but sometimes it's caused by the mind. 3 stars (HEALING Bak Pain????!!!!) - This book might be worth considering for anyone who has some kind of a back problem (every third of us?). However, I have an issue with the title of the book as I find it over-promising and misleading. When buying the book one would expect to find solutions for his or her back pain ("Healing Back Pain" is the title!!!) However the book concentrates on only one kind of a back pain, namely one resulting from our suppressing of our feelings and emotions. I am not debating whether Dr. Sarno is right or wrong in his theory, but I am really disappointed in not finding any solution (healing) to a real back problem... As alternative reading I rather suggest "Can We Live 150 Year?" where the author devotes a whole chapter to spine problems and resulting from them diseases. But before you buy this book, better check Amazon's "Search Inside the Book" feature to make sure that you are buying what you really want. 5 stars (Still Going) - It's been six years now and I rarely even think about my back anymore. Before reading the book, my backpain was the first thing I thought about in the morning and the last thing I thought about at night. I thought about it all day and it was even starting to wake me up. I had scheduled back surgery but read the book before it was too late. Told the neurosurgeon to have a nice day. I was fine. The pain is muscle cra... 5 stars (An unbelievably touching book) - I originally bought this book for the sole reason that Marian and i were childhood friends who grew up on the same street together in Staten Island. I knew of Dave's death shortly after 9/11 and kept Marian and her family in my thoughts daily. I knew Marian was gifted but was totally unprepared for how much this book would touch me and change my life. I now view the people i love in a different way. Her book was beautiful and so well written. I felt like i can somewhat understand what all of these brave people went through both firefighters and their families, in the wake of 9/11. 5 stars (More than a Memoir) - To be honest, I am generally not a fan of memoirs of this type. I mean yes this is a woman who suffered a profound tragedy but does this mean she can write? Well, after devouring it's nearly 450 pages in a couple of sittings, I think it can be said, that Marian Fontana is a writer. A damn good one. She deserves not only to have her story told but to tell it herself. This is both an honest and humorous look at the grieving process as well as a fascinating piece of history. Fontana's account of how she and her some of her fellow widows organized and stood up not only for 911 victims and their families, but for firemen themselves, gives us an inside look at just how these men who perform the most dangerous and lauded of work, are basically treated like crap. There is something very special about this book and just how close it puts you to the incredilby profound grief that enveloped Ms. Fontana's life. Yet, I never really felt sorry for her because I don't think she allows the reader to do that. She is a strong person yet she admits her flaws, thus making her even stronger. This is a must read for anyone interested in 9-11 as well as anyone interested in grief, love and loss. 5 stars (Sharply observed and moving) - One of the memorable images seared into the world's consciousness on September 11, 2001 was ... 5 stars (What can I say that hasn't already been said) - The fact that this little book has received 135 reviews and counting is because so many want others to share in this. Profound yet simple. Life changing. Contrary thinking to our unsuccessful ways. When Deepak Chopra tells us to quit wasting energy trying to convince others of our opinions, I will need some time to implement that into my life. I know it will come, because now when I am done trying to convince others of my point of view, to no avail, I think back to his advice, and realize I need to acquire it as a natural trait. Realizing each time how much time and energy I just wasted. This just scratches the surface. The other profound lesson that is changing my life is that the question we should be asking ourselves, is "How can I help, How can I serve" instead of "What's in it for me" Combining that with giving freely, in line with the laws of nature, is giving me a new foundation for forming a company I am working on. It completely shifted my focus to helping, instead of demanding. I know that by serving freely the interests of my patrons, I will receive like kind in return. Not because I require it, but rather because that is the way it flows; even to the point of concentrating my efforts now on helping the maximum amount of people, rather than making them customers. All of this is predicated on the necessity to meditate to get in touch with your inner... as he calls it, the embryo of your God self. Which is a part of the infinite potentiality, the essential energy of all things. In so doing, making the unmanifest, into the manifest. Some say that all of mankind's problems can be reduced to his inability to sit still, quietly, for 15 minutes. Deepak Chopra and Dr Wayne Dyer co-authored a book. I thank Dr Wayne Dyer for showing me how to meditate by simply lying down or sitting, and gently letting all thoughts leave my mind. Each thought is tied to an emotion. 5 stars (Breakthrough Book!) - I purchased this book for my teenager before sending her off to college as a freshman. She doesn't like to read, and basically dislikes books, so I was hoping she would at least skim through it and pick up some of the principles in this book. To my surprise she started reading it and never put it down! I have not read the book, but there must be something very practical and relevant in this book if it grabbed my 18 year old daughters attention! She thought it was great! 1 stars (Condescending Fluff) - It's appalling to me that this book has such a high rating as of today. I received this book from a relative when I was 14, and its condescending tone combined with the fact that it tries too hard to be "hip" effectively turned me off to it. Had I receieved "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" I may have read it. Five years later and after reading some glowing amazon.com reviews, I decided to give it a fair shot. Unfortunately, my initial impression was dead-on. This book is filled to the brim with vague fluff and moralistic, cliches. Despite that the book is marketed as written "by a teen for teens," Covey writes in a heavy-handed, righteous manner comparable to an authoritarian parent. Covey bludgeons the reader with anti-sex, anti-smoking, anti-anything-the-masses-think-is-bad propaganda. He neither cautions in an objective manner, nor enlightens. Instead, he appeals to vanity, which we know teenagers are full of (*cough*HYPOCRITE*cough*). In his diatribe against smoking, he mentions TERRIBLE side effects like *gasp* bad breath and... YELLOW FINGERTIPS! Let's not forget-- teenagers think they're invincible! They would NEVER take heed if we warned them that smoking causes CANCER AND DEATH. 5 stars (Exciting Mindset) - A Whole New Mind by Daniel Pink is an extraordinary book. Finally we are admitting that intelligence, performance, and yes--even success--can be achieved by those who appear to be more creative than academic. Pink goes to great lengths to explain his position relative to the kind of successful worker Americans must become in order to avoid being unemployed. Even better, Pink includes sections called Portfolios where the reader is given suggestions for ways to strengthen his/her "whole new mind." 4 stars (Food for thought) - Where the big issues are concerned -- how to revitalize the U.S. economy in the age of outsourcing, why isn't our educational system working and how do we go about fixing it, etc. -- I've always felt that it was more important to raise the right questions than to come up with quick answers. By that standard, this book is a winner. I think most of us would agree that the world of work (on the personal as well as the national level) has changed radically in the last 20 years. It's not a major logical leap to conclude that, rather than choosing to cultivate the skills and abilities that led to success in the "information age," we should broaden our range. It's possible to argue with the author's list of "six senses," but they're suggestions rather than prescriptions. (Nor are they touchy-feely nonsense removed from the practical world: the concept of "story," for example, is something that every spin doctor understands.) His personal anecdote about the drawing class has immense implications: we view the world (physical and mental) through a fog of preconceptions, and the ability to see what is REALLY there is crucial. I felt that the book wasn't as coherent and focused as his earlier one, but it's thought-provoking and stimulating -- and a good read, too. 4 stars (Richer life ahead) - So what are we mortals, especially those of us in the Western Hemisphere, supposed to do in a world where computers are fast a... 4 stars (Tuesday's with Morrie) - A short story that makes you reflect on your life and whether or not you are achieving the dreams you set out for yourself. I recommend it. 5 stars (All About the LITTLE Things) - Yeah there is no way to describe the book. To capture the essence of it, the story behind it or what you come away with. If this book did not touch your soul, or move you to tears, I would be concerned about your ability (or inability rather) to empathize. This was one of the most sincere, honest, and poignant books I've ever read. It was well written - short and sweet. Morrie never claims to be philospher! 4 stars (Good) - The book gives practical, digestible essence of leadership. This makes it much better to digest as one can read and not be overwhelmed with pages upon pages of info that will keep you from reading it. The points are specific, he uses stories to highlight the quality, as well as some practical ideas/recommendations for each quality. It also gives you a suggested way to read as one should not try to read it in one sitting, but read one quality and meditate/live it for a day to have it sink in. 5 stars (Don't Let Your Skills Keep You From Leading) - Don't Let Your Skills Keep You From Successful "Are you a thinker, a doer, or a clutch player? 1 stars (HORRABLE) - In my 4 years as an undergraduate i have never read such a poorly written book. She has more typo's then I have including multiple references to the NEO-PR (NEO-PI-R). She incorrectly summarizes groundbreaking research (i.e. Ceci, Rosenblum, & Debruyn, 1999). Her feminist agenda flows freely all over this book along with usless stories about her self that dont add to the text. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS BOOK FOR YOUR CLASS. You and your students will regret it. 4 stars (Increasing understanding of Aging) - Hellen Bee is able to carry one through the years of adulthood through many avenues. Using scientific studies she interprets the data in meaningful ways. Inclusion of personal accounts and her conversational style make the reading interesting. The book continually ties previous ideas to new concepts giving a nice continuity. I especially enjoyed her occasional insertions of the not-so-scientific spiritual aspects of the adult experience, which I was not expecting in a textbook. My ideas of what it means to grow old were challenged and changed during the reading of this book. Some myths of adulthood are adeptly smashed making the thought of aging not such a frightful one. The only criticism I would include is that occasionally the point being made was not clear to me and a few conclusions seem to have contradictory statements in following chapters. That may be expected in the field of psychology, however. ... 4 stars (Great book! ) - This book is very well written and will keep your interest. The book covers some very important facets of leadership mainly: integrity, ethics, trust, and other peoples feelings. If you are reading this review and you don't really know why those factors are keystones to leadership then this book would be a good addition to your leadership skills. If leadership were a pie this book would be several slices but not the whole pie. For an in-depth look at leadership read the army field manual for leadership. 5 stars (Primal Leadership) - The book by Daniel Goleman, Richard Boyatzis and Anne Mc Kee is a wonderful study on all modern leadership styles, and how to learn how to lead with Emotional Intelligence. Several cases are presented, on worldwide and US companies, providing us with the best and thorough analysis on how to achieve the highest performance, by focusing on the diverse aspects of Emotional Intelligence. I believe it is a must for top executives, managers and counsellors from Organizations, and for all of those seeking to improve their emotional skills, be them focused on job or on life improvement. 2 stars (Too stretching) - I really liked Dan Goleman's previous books on Emotional Intelligence (EI). Goleman's article on "Primal Leadership" appeared in Harvard Business Review (HBR) a few years ago. His book version of primal leadership is a little too stretching. GREAT BOOK...food for thought! 3 stars (Good but Not Great) - Although both "The Not So Big House" and "Creating the Not So Big House" are good books with well-thought out concepts, I think you can find better books on the subject. After reading both books, I felt the information rather evaporated, and I was left without some good, basic practical outlines on how to proceed with the house. Fortunately, I came across "The Home Design Handbook" by June Cotner Myrvang & Steve Myrvang, AIA, where at the end of every well thought out chapter, you found a detailed, practical checklist of major issues that needed to be considered before proceeding with your plans. 4 stars (Good book that reinforces solid ideas) - This book is helpful because it reinforces universal principles. I didn't find much new here, but I did overcome some obstacles that had been in my way. If you are looking for a great book, read my favorite, Optimal Thinking: How To Be Your Best Self, because and you will rise above mediocrity and the great into the best that life can offer. 5 stars (Your life equals the sum total of your habits.) - I looked thru a few of the reviews about this book and I have to laugh at the review that said this information is for Homer Simpson and that anyone over the age of 10 should have figured it out. I must ask if it's so obvious, why do most people waste time working at jobs they hate, just to pay the bills, living a life of wasted talent and never come close to becoming rich or even more important happiness? If success is so obvious, why do most of us not take the necessary tasks? This book is in my top 5 of over about 280 personal development books I have read. I will agree that the topics are very simple, but extremely effective. We are all blessed with the same number of hours in a day. The ONLY way you will become happy and successful is if you learn to manage your habits, time, and money. Most of us waste many hours of the day doing meaningless tasks. Do you think your doctor would want to mop the floors? NO WAY. Why is it then that most of us feel as if we have to be a jack of all trades and master none? This book talks of specialization and how to make the most of this one time shot called life. This book makes sense of how to get down to the core of self-development which is how to change your habits, which will in turn change your life. If I had to recommend 2 books to anyone, the first would be this and the second would be The Master Key to Riches by Napoleon Hill. 5 stars (Great book) - Too bad our Canadian friend didn't use the book. This book serves as a great reminder of how important our attitude is in every area of life. 5 stars (90% attitude and 10% situation!) - There is NOTHING more important than attitude when it comes to success in leadership! No, I mean it. In general this is just an all around true point: success is 90% attitude and 10% situation. How you deal with things as a leader has a profound impact on those around you and once again, John has produced a wonderful work that conveys all kinds of fantastic points that will help you develop and grow as a leader. I have friends who need to read this, because of their negative attitude; it's hard to be around them. Great price, and I'm thinking to buy one for some of my friends so they can understand the importance of an attitude. There can be written something more deeper on a subject. But I think this book serves a purpose. Getting people to notice their attitude. Its nice and short, easy to read. Buy it for your house, have your family read it. 2 stars (Unimpressive) - If you have read one or two self-help books, you might find some good information here. But, if you are savvy, you will be disenchanted with the simplistic, airy fairy fluff. If you want to understand the message behind each feeling and how to resolve troublesome feelings, I recommend Optimal Thinking: How To Be Your Best Self. Just by reading it I was able to increase my joy and happiness by following some very simple suggestions. I am a holistic healer and found this book to be inspirational and useful to myself as well as my clients. 1 stars (One decent chapter, the rest sheer drivel.) - The last chapter of this book has some good ideas for positive thinking for yourself. The rest of the book will infuriate you, because she claims that EVERYTHING bad that happens is our own fault because we have negative feelings about other things. If you accept that premise as it applies to you and you alone, it's one thing--for example, you made some bad choices in life and now you have no money, have an addiction or have some other issues. But to say that it's your fault you were rear-ended on the freeway because your negative feelings attracted the person who rear-ended you.....good grief. And world tragedies, too, are all caused by negative feelings--just an asinine opinion on her part. Even her examples of what to do didn't come across as realistic. If you apply what she says, you *should* be able to "feel" yourself thin. But even she says you have to still go to the gym and work out. The author's first book, Beyond the Twelve Steps, thanks in the "Acknowledgments" people who "channel" such "beings" as Seth, Ramtha, Zarathustra, Mafu, and Rajni.
