5 stars (Excellent service) - It was incredible. I ordered it on wednesday night, it was shipped on friday and I got it during the weekend. Besides the book was new in perfect conditions! Thank you. 2 stars (A textbook for college business majors (only?)) - If you want a general IT book then don't even think about buying this one, despite its title. This is a textbook for college business majors, and looks at things from the business angle. The book is less suitable for non-student readers. It is geared for use by a lecturer who can draw attention to the important concepts underlying the field of IT, and can steer students to useful supplementary material. The book races across the surface of the whole field of IT. The authors have packed in a lot of material, but at a cost. The explanations may be good enough for students to answer a quiz about the various buzzwords, but there is not enough space here to cover anything in depth. The students, and you, may be left without a clear idea of what the words really mean. At the other end of the scale, the book struggles to make plain the broad sweep of IT concepts. Although the authors try hard, ideas tend to get lost amidst the large number of factoids. One book is never going to be enough to cover all of IT. Your choices are to be more selective about which area you want to learn about, to pick a book which is more clearly aimed at being a simple overview, or to buy this book and work really hard at following up its leads to other material to fill in the gaps. ... 3 stars (Decent introduction to MIS, but misses on some issues) - I used this book in a graduate level course on MIS. It was a decent introduction to the subject, but I would really expect the book to be used more at an undergraduate level; as others have noted, it does not delve too deeply into any areas. My biggest complaint about this book is that it simply misses the point on a couple of issues, both technical and business. Its discussion of internet technologies contains many of the "newbie" mistakes one would expect from someone just learning about HTML, HTTP, XML, and web programming, especially Java. It also has a section in one chapter that goes into marketing and in my opinion misinterprets some of the foundational concepts. Two things I do like about the book are 1. It covers ethical issues within MIS, which is a developing topic and one that deserves attention. Every chapter has anectdotal stories highlighting ethical delimas. 2. Each of the 5 Parts of the book starts with a case introduction, and each chapter starts with an expansion or continuation of that case. The case exemplifies some of the issues that will be discussed on subsequent pages, and brings a level of reality to the subject that I enjoyed. Not a bad book, but by the same token requires an instructor who really knows the subject well to separate the good parts from the bad for the students. 5 stars (The second edition is great!) - The 2nd edition of this book (whose cover is NOT shown here) is great 3 stars (It's Pretty neat.) - This book has a great cover, however I was thrown a little by the pages. and, oh yea it's a little outdated. cheers ... 5 stars (A Primer for Disaster Recovery Planning) - reader who want to start their DRP, and do not know where to start with, this is the book that you can kick off with your DRP meeting with this guide. A good book that you can trust and work around with your IT DR on this subject. Case studies, project timelines, statistics, organisastion charts of a DRP, and some questionairs and forms help readers to quickly have all these information in your finger tips. As a planner, I find it very useful too. It also act as a check lists of your current planning and be sure to cover as many area as possible. The Appendix is very useful that provide flowcharts, charts, diagrams, forms, questionair, procedures and more. A book that should not be miss. 5 stars (Disaster Recovery Planning) - As an IT Manager for a mid-sized (140 emp) company, I found the primer to be extremely helpful as a starting point for planning. Hiatt clearly explains the nature of risk and planning. Statistics are lengthy but drive the point home. Most importantly, she reveals that DRP isn't only about IT. If you are an IT person in charge of starting the process, this is an excellent primer that points out all the other areas you have to consider. Hiatt outlines in 100 pages all the elements of research, planning, implementation, and maintenance. She reveals who should be involved in the process and what type of people should maintain the accuracy and currency of the plan. She even gives criteria on how to choose your team. Hiatt references many times throughout the manual when/how/if to use an outside consultant and off-site storage facilities. The following 150+ pages of vendor listings, charts and appendices are extremely helpful. She doesn't just write about planning, but gives you the checklists, plans, and questionnaires to help you get started. It will be much easier for me to use some of her lists and customize for our needs instead of having to write it all from scratch. Plus, sh... 5 stars (A very comprehensive publication) - This book covers SAP's transaction system and its Business Warehouse data warehouse. The SAP part, Part A, covers 32% of the book (pages 1-134). Part B, which is 68% of the book, covers BW from pages 135 through 419. While it includes a wealth of general information about both the transaction and data warehouse systems, it also contains technical information that provides very good information. In Chapter B12 (72 pages from pg 250-322), Creating and Loading InfoCubes, the step-by-step procedure is shown via screenshots. Chapter 14 (31 pages), Creating Queries with BEx, shows the step-by-step procedure for creating a query. These two chapters, covering 103 pages, alone constitute 24.5% of the whole book (and 36% of the BW part of the book). The book also covers the planning and design, which is something I found very useful. Ideally, the book should be divided into two books. However, for those who desire to get an overall picture of the environment (after all BW typically is installed in the SAP environment), this is a great book, very easy to follow and understand even for novices, though somewhat expensive. I would not suggest this book to someone, though, who might think that this book will enable one to develop into a BW developer, for which more extensive training is required. 2 stars (Basic BW Book) - This book gives some information about BW. 80% of the content is about background and peripheral information. What is ERP? How project team should be formulated, etc. 20% information is about BW. This information is very basic. It is not complete. You may want to buy electronic version. Information may be worth $6. But I would not recommend buying the "paper" book. Very ordinary book with elementary content. 5 stars (Best BW treatise available on the market today) - I jumped ahead to read Part 2 on the BW, since I am the lead for a BW implementation and that section is of utmost interest to me. After having scoured t... iUniverse Inc :: Computers-Information Technology :: Computer Bks - General Information :: Arshad Khan :: :: SAP and BW Data Warehousing
BIT Suite eliminates the programming hassles inherent in frames, pull down menus, parent/child windows and HTML protocol.
