5 stars (Best Book Out There) - Everyone studies for the ACT in a different way but the one thing that everyone needs to do is practice. This book offers 3 practice tests published by the College Board. Getting into the ACT offers 2. My advice is get both of them. When I did 2 practice tests before this book I got 28's on both. Then I worked through the 3 tests in it and saw significant improvements each time. When I finally took the ACT I got a 31 on it so from personal experience I recommend this book. 5 stars (Taking the ACT, this book is a "must have"!) - The Real ACT Prep Guide is a great resource for preparing for the test. I can't understand why anyone would pay hundreds of dollars for a classroom course or private tutor, when they can just buy this book? The Real ACT Prep Guide allowed me to work at my own pace, whenever I wanted to, 24/7. Most importantly the "retired" practice test questions have given me a major confidence boost for the upcoming ACT. 5 stars (Awesome Test Prep) - This book is great. Not only does it have 3 actual ACT tests to practice with, but provides info on the new essay portion of the test. The tips and strategies included were very helpful. This is a must have for anyone preparing to take the ACT test. ... 5 stars (Very compelling) - The authors' use of case studies and real-life examples makes this more than a textbook -- and much more readable than one. I found myself excited about reading each chapter. And I know I'll be looking up things in it in the future. My only quibble is that I found many copyediting errors that I hope the publisher will fix for future editions. 5 stars (go professor Gerrig!!!!) - I had the pleasure of taking intro psych with professor Gerrig (one of the authors),and surprise, this was the book we used. I found it to be a great resource;it is so jam packed with useful information about things that we encounter in life that i'd recommend buying this book even if you're not a psych student. 5 stars (Psychology and Life - One of the best "intro" books) - I have about 30 introductory psychology books on my shelf, and none is more dog-eared and appreciated than this latest edition by Zimbardo and Gerrig. The breadth of coverage is astonishing, and they do so without sacrificing depth - several of the chapters (such as the outstanding ones on sensation and perception) are rigorous enough even for a graduate course in cognition. The style is eminently readable and still manages to cover all the important points. This is one of the best selling textbooks in the field of psychology with a long history of satisfied students and instructors, and this is no accident. ... 3 stars (CLAD Text) - A well written text essential for acquiring CLAD credentialing. Myths are perpetuated which greatly reduces the credibility - there is only one "race", humans or Homo sapiens. Very few of us were born or came from the Caucasus Mountains of eastern Europe, yet 17th century artificial constructs of "race" and "Caucasian" are used. There is no discussion of how skin pigmentation is an ecotype adaptation, not a "race." Science, Scientific American, Discovery and other peer-reviewed journals have corrected "race" misconceptions repeatedly - yet the authors, with education backgrounds, appear to have not completed a review of current literature. There is no discussion of critical thinking (www.criticalthinking.org). Children of "color" are discussed, but there is no discussion of children of "pallor". The 3rd edition can be greatly improved by being current, i.e., people of pallor (so-called "white") are now the "minority" in many communities; a CD-ROM or DVD and online video streaming resources; correct use of the term "race." Inquiry is discussed under Science, but only the Natl Science Education Standards are acknowleged - TIMSS, Geography, Project 2061 (AAAS), GLOBE (www.globe.gov) 15,000+ schools in 100 countries on 7 continents and multiple other standards are ignored. The authors get it wrong regarding the language of Science, many students with nonEnglish backgrounds have an advantage over English speakers because of the Latin and Greek roots. Effective teaching uses "hands-on, minds-on" not "familiarize, memorize, regurgitate and forget." Effective K-12 and university instructors minimize lecturing and maximize opportunities to internalize knowledge across curricula. A wealth of current critical thinking, classroom management and teaching techniques will go a long way toward helping make this a credible, rather than a required text. 5 stars (Golden resource) - I almost felt like I was cheating on the CLAD test. 2 stars (Did anyone fact-check this book?) - I just received this book. The second school profile I turned to (Stanford University) was completely botched. While the narrative text seems to be about Stanford, the sidebars full of statistical information is obviously not related to Stanford. I have no idea what school it belongs to - but it lists Stanford as a "public" institution with an in-state tuition of just a few thousand dollars annually. I wish. Lucky for me I knew enough about the school to recognize these patent errors. Now I am left to wonder what other information in this book is completely off the mark? Everything else I have read seems to fit what I know about the schools, but I don't know that much about many of the schools reviewed. 5 stars (Get The Normal Stuff, then Ask the Students) - The nice thing about this book is its philosophy of asking the students at the schools to rate the colleges they attend. That way you get the low down on things like the quality of life, cafeteria food, social life, political leaning, all in all some 60 categories. That's in addition, of course to the standard information that you'd get from the school itself like admissions criteria, deadlines, phone numbers etc. You've got to enjoy some of the categories in which colleges are ranked: Under Politics: Students Most Nostalgic for Ronald Reagan Students Most Nostalgic for Bill Clinton Students Most Politically Active Election? What Election? Under Food: Best Campus Food Is It Food? There are about 3,500 colleges and universities in the United States. Selecting the 361 to feature here is a combination of science and art. At the top is certainly a set of schools like Harvard or Stanford that will be on any list. As you get down into the hundreds there is more choice. After a while geographic diversity, rounding out the variety eventually has to get down to a feeling that we want this one more than that one. You may disagree, ... 5 stars (Always remember...) - The reader is another person. Regardless of the rules, talk to that person! Lay it out in human terms... Than another person can relate to. There is no excuse for bad writing. - Clint Arthur, author of "Free Your Love Now" 4 stars (Embrace the Power that is Turabian!) - I used this for several years as an undergrad, and now that I'm being sucked into APA-heck, I look back on it fondly. It covered everything I ever needed to know to write a paper. Some reviewers have complained that it is not sufficiently modern, that it does not provide a citation style for web pages, etc. This is incorrect. Section 8.141, on page 151, shows us how to do this. (Some ellision from the demonstrated form will probably be necessary, but it works.) You didn't invent the internet, kids. It's been around for a few years, and the grown-ups really do know about it. Turabian, Grossman, and Bennett did make several assumptions about the reader of their book. They assumed he or she is capable of using a table of contents, and of reading rather large chunks of text and assimilating or marking the relevant portions. If one lacks the intellectual fortitude to do that, one should probably skip this manual and ask their instructor if they can use the "Golden Books" or "DC Comics" manual of style. 5 stars (Accentuate the positive) - Have you ever noticed that more people read the good reviews more than the bad ones? This book is appropriate for what it is meant for. If you know Turabian died prior to a new edition of the book, then maybe you should be using your PC to search for electronic resources (using Turabian font in the search engine)..... and not wasting time being negative... ...
