4 stars (Good data but needs more specific examples) - I was elected to my local board of education and we recently received a credible complaint from a parent that harassment of her son was being overlooked by school administrators. Accordingly, I felt obliged to read up on the issue of bullying. This book sets forth both the problem and the recommended solutions. Prof. Olweus is Norwegian and his studies primarily involve Scandinavian schools. Accordingly, questions came to my mind such as "Is Norway a more homogenious society than the United States? If so, are there any differences in both the problem and the solutions in a more ethnically heterogeneous society?" I don't know the answers but, the reader should keep these issues in mind when reading this book. Prof. Olweus describes the problem and he sets forth well organized solutions to the problem which require involvement of teachers, administrators and parents, and further require communication with all students, even those who are neither bullies nor victims. The one problem I have with the book is that there are very few case histories and specific examples given. The book proposes solutions but does not provide a case history in which the specific solution was successfully applied to the problem at hand. Reliable data and sound recommendations are important but a few specific examples of how these recommendations worked would be helpful. For example, Olweus recommends that parents of a bully apply sanctions if the bullying behavior does not improve. He states, "The consequence should be associated with some degree of discomfort or unpleasantness, but corporal punishment must not be used." OK, fine; but what are specific examples of "discomfor or unpleasantness?" Where are the case histories giving examples? Without these, the book does not provide as fulfilling reading as it otherwise might. This book is well worth reading and I recommend it with the reservations expressed above. 5 stars (This book is the... 5 stars (A Book for Every Teacher) - Whether you teach math, English, science, or any discipline in a school, this book will make you a BETTER teacher. In addition, when you apply Tovani's suggestions, your students will IMPROVE. This book is worth taking personal time outside the classroom to read. It will make your time in the classroom more purposeful. 4 stars (Practical, easy to apply strategies.) - This book gave me a lot of ideas for getting students to probe into a text to get beyond basic comprehension of a text to creating personal meaning from text. Her techniques are for every student, the talented and the struggling. The only frustrating thing I found about the book is she assumes all teachers work in ideal environments. She tells teachers to get parents to donate post its for the note taking strategy she uses. Parents at my inner city school would not do this. 5 stars (This book was SO helpful!) - I was assigned this book for a class this semester in my grad program. As a science teacher, I went into the class thinking, "Why do I have to take this class??" After the first day, I went to buy my textbook. That night we were assigned the first chapter. I sat down, to read just that chapter, but ended up reading the entire book. Tovani's style of writing is so easy to read and follow. There are items discussed in the book that you can incorporate into your first day of class, and things to use all year. I feel that with these ideas in place, my students are going to do much better in my class. My eyes are open now to the need for teaching reading in every subject. I would reccommend this book to first year teachers and well seasoned teachers alike. Thank you Ms. Tovani for writing such a great book! ... 3 stars (Review of The Art of Teaching Writing ) - Calkins book was an easy, yet informative read. As a education student, I learned a lot about how to motivate children to want to write. Calkins techniques are practical and simple. It seems that the book could be geared to not just elementary grades, but also to middle school ages. The examples of student writings were great. I will definitely be re-reading this book when I begin teaching in a couple of years. 4 stars (The Art of Teaching and Writing) - In the book The Art of Teaching and Writing, Lucy McCormick Calkins discusses various types of ways on how to instruct children to write efficient papers. The techniques that she illustrates in her book mostly came from her original ideas. These effective ideas could be used while instructing children or when teacher workshops are set up. Calkins writing style was very easy to read. She sets various examples to help illustrate her teaching techniques. One issue that I had with this book was the fact that the topics were too broad. Another problem that I have is that this book is not appropriate for elementary teachers. It could possible be used for middle school students but it is more suitable for teachers who are instructing High School Students. Overall, I feel that this book was organized very well and was easy to read. 3 stars (Good Book for Elementary School Teachers) - The Art of Teaching and Writing by Lucy Calkins is a book that I would recommend for new Elementary School Teachers. This book makes an attempt at illustrating how teachers can create creative writing lesson plans for young students. I must admit the size of this book was a little intimidating. It isn't really the type of book that you would read straight through, but perhaps skim through picking out material that pertains to what you want to convey to your students. The material in each chapter did not always flow well and a few times I found myself having to reread what I had ju... 3 stars (Its O.K.) - hey im an 8th grader in advanced classes. this book is okay cuz it has clean organization and stuff, and ive seen MUCH worse. lmao. it also has the *special* features like the study guides, extra help, and online resources. the really bad 1 i used in 7th grade, alg 1, by some otha company, was like 20 years old and uncolorful, stinkiyyy, boring, and unhelpful. lol i got a C. this book, however, isn't as bad, and also easyer to read. but its still math, one of my most unfavorite subjects!!! anyways, thank u 4 ur time and patience. 3 stars (not to good) - The book itself is bad enough. it teaches you as though it was teaching a mathmatician. i am a student, and the whole class has c's,d's,and f's. it does not give any other information that students would be confused about 3 stars (Pretty average, depends on your intentions) - In 9th grade, while taking Algebra 2 / Analysis, I used this book. Well, I didn't "use" it to learn the material. (Partly because I knew it all anyway, but that's besides the point.) The truth is that this book doesn't really teach you much as it's explanations are breif and I never really read them anyway. It's good it you want to do homework problems as it has many problems and even solutions in the back. Therefore, it really matters what you intend to use this textbook for. If it's just for homework and doing problems, it's good. If it's to teach an entire Algebra 2 course, it's not so good. ... 5 stars (Creating Writers Through 6-Trait Writing Assessment and Instruction (4th Ed)) - This book gives so many examples of the qualities to look for and teach in writing instruction. I especially like the fact that this edition is more inclusive of secondary ideas and samples. With this book as a guide, it is hard to miss what is important to the writing instructional process. The information is comprehensive and user friendly. 4 stars (Great info, inconvenient format) - Creating Writers got me charged up and well-prepared for teaching sriting/revision using the 6 Trait model. Spandel writes well, using a combination of research-based information and personal anecdotes to keep the reader's attention. I appreciate the number and variety of samples she included for practice revision/assessment. The samples were, however, not very easy to duplicate for classroom use. The print is too small and there are often two samples on one page, or one sample on several pages. The layout is difficult to work with. Overall, though, the book is excellent. I have been to two training sessions about 6 Traits, but it took Spandel's book to get me hooked and enthusiastic, and made me confident about using the 6 Traits in the classroom. The information deserves a 5 star rating. The format deserves a 2. 4 stars (This book is worth it!) - I found this book to be very helpful, user friendly, and filled with good information. 5 stars (Most practical book out there.) - After researching most of the books on the market for Aspergers children and teens, this is surely the most practical source on social skills training. It's not a theoretical treatise, but a user-friendly way to quickly teach relevant skills to students with AS. I recommend to parents and teachers alike. 2 stars (for children under 12) - this book seems to target children under 12 years of age. It has very few pointers for adolescents. this book tends to be aimed at the education profession rather than parents. 5 stars (The best social skills book for our family) - As a parent homeschooling a child with Asperger Syndrome, I?????#ve bought about a dozen books to help me teach my child social skills. This one is the most useful I?????#ve found. Most books on this topic are aimed only at teachers and are hard to adapt to use at home with one child; that?????#s not the case with this book. While the book includes instructions for school personnel and describes how to teach the skills in classrooms and small groups, it is relatively free of educational jargon and doesn?????#t waste too much space on things that useless to me, like reproducible handouts for the children to take home to their parents. The skills are broken down into small steps and are very specific, which is helpful with my literal-minded child. As a socially adept adult, I sometimes have trouble finding ways to explain social conventions, like the ?????#Two-Question Rule,?????# as Baker calls it: ?????#When others as you a question and you answer it, you can ask a similar question right back.?????# I?????#m sure I do this every day (?????#How are you??????# ?????#Fine, how are you??????#), and yet it would have taken me ages to find a way to sum this up for my child. 5 stars (Interesting, practical intro to ed'l psych'y for teachers) - In a highly readable manner, Jeanne Ormrod introduces educational psychology for K-12 teachers. She incorporates many of the learning principles and teaching practices her text espouses by using colorfully illustrated and highlighted multiple formats throughout, such as summaries, case studies, classroom applications and examples, emphasis of major points, and learning exercises. The three major sections address learner diversity, how students learn, and becoming an effective teacher. She outlines seven themes for effective learning which she addresses in every section: interaction, information processing, relevance, classroom climate, challenge, expectations, and diversity. The text cites educational research throughout (there is an index with 44 pages of references) yet the paragraphs have a readibility and easy flow to them. Ormrod's chapters consistently address her goals as an author: focusing on cores principles, relating them to our own behavior, processing them effectively and applying them in the classroom. The phrase "interesting textbook," usually an oxymoron, in this case is well-deserved praise. ... 5 stars (Happy Customer!) - This was the first used textbook that I purchased online. The book was in almost-new condition, it arrived within 5 days after I placed the order, AND the cost was 50% less than the used book price at my college bookstore! I'll be searching Amazon again next semester! 5 stars (A VERY GOOD MATH BOOK!!!!!!) - So often, math textbooks are beyond anyone's comprehension. Here is one book that has changed all that! There are plenty of examples and explains the reasons and theories as to why a certain math topic is solved the way it is. It also shows different ways one could solve problems! 5 stars (The best reading methods textbook I've found) - I teach a course in elementary reading methods for undergraduate education students. This is the third textbook I've tried, and it is excellent! It has what students need to know about the theory and practice of teaching reading, written in a very readable, non-overwhelming way. Plus it has lots of practical teaching ideas. Our lab school saw it and ordered several copies for its teachers also. I highly recommend it. 5 stars (A must have!!) - I was first introduced to this book in one of my graduate literacy courses and I have been hooked every since. The teachers at my school pass it around constantly looking for ideas. My favorite aspect of this book is the fact that there are real teachers giving real examples of what works in their classrooms. There are no strategies that seem too hard implement in your classroom, because the layout is right there!! You know it can be done and it words because the examples in the book are proof! You don't feel like you are reading about some ideal or Utopia of a classroom. You are reading about REAL classrooms. I absolutely love it! 5 stars (Excellent resource for teachers) - This is an excellent resource. It is concise and contains a wealth of information. I teach second grade and am working on a Master's degree in literacy. I am finding this book to be invaluable. Much of the information is sorted into charts for easy referencing. So many of the books I have read lately seem to ramble on and on. This book makes it's point and moves on to other salient information. I get rid of so many of the professional books I purchase after I read them. This one is a keeper. It is very pertinent to the current trend in improving the literacy of our children. ... 5 stars (Must have!) - I re-visited the idea of getting the activity book when my friend had all these amazing project ideas, coloring pages and activity pages--all from the activity workbook. It's tremendous, thorough, and does a lot of research and thinking for you. It's a fabulous extension of the Story of the World books. 5 stars (A great compliment) - We are 4 weeks into enjoying Story of the World Book 1 and have found the activity book to be a great complement. The suggested activities for each chapter make the text come alive. The group of coloring pages alternates between informative (but not overwhelming) maps and coloring pages appropriate to the text. I was especially pleased to coincidently (?) see a full color illustration in one of my mother-in-law's books on ancient Egypt that matched my daughter's coloring page version. We might have done the narrative retelling on our own, but having the narration guidelines helps. I like the activity book and don't know what we'd do without it! 4 stars (Great Story) - This is a great introduction to Western Civ. for children. 1 stars (TEXTBOOK ) - I ORDERED MY ANATOMY BOOK A MONTH AGO, AND I HAVE NOT RECIEVE IT YET. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON. IF THE SELLER DOES NOT HAVE IT, I WOULD LIKE MY MONEY BACK TO MY CREDIT CARD AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! 4 stars (Essential for A&P Students.) - I own the International Edition of this book, ISBN 0-321-20413-1. Very good use of English, clear and easy to understand - even complex areas are explained fully and legibly. Excellent use of rich graphics and photographs where appropriate, and a very useful set of appendices at the back with everything from normal values for most blood tests to a Periodic Table. Accompanying CD and website both very helpful for the A&P student. Highly recommended. Why 4 stars? 4 stars (Nice and Well Organized Book. ) - I had this book for about two semesters, in college by the way. The first semester I dropped it and finally the second semester I got a B. Interesting hm? Anyhow, the book contains a large amount of information including very nice diagrams and photographs and has vastly improved in my opinion from the early first few editions. What makes this book extremely informative is the fact that it is pretty well organized and set up including indexing and clear contents listing. 16 chapters starting slowly from the basics of the human body, its relations to chemistry, cells and tissues, and finally going more in depth by digging deep into the organ systems and the human anatomy. The diagrams are clearly listed, but of course I've seen a few errors. The information is just so much. Unless you are crazy about this, I doubt you'll remember much without reviewing it over and over continuously on a weekly if not daily bases. Almost each part in the diagram is listed out on the same page or a few pages back and forth to give the reader a more precise knowledge if the reader intends to know more of what the diagram/photo represents part for part. The information is simply mind blowing and pretty exhausting to remember. Most readers of this and other anatomy/medical/etc related books would sooner or later ask themselves "who the heck would make up all these silly names and expect us to memorize it?!" The information is a little too compact for me and this is the only problem I have with this book, the simple fact that its a lot to comprehend and doesn't seem very intended in my Physiology and Anatomy basics class. Like always, mix other text books with this one if you intend to get everything out of this subject. No one book is perfect. Otherwise, its a decent book overall. 3 stars (Tolerable) - This book has some useful diagrams and illustrations. It's easy to read, but seems a bit too simplified at times. 5 stars (Van de Walle achieves high marks) - Elementary and Middle School Mathematics: Teaching Developmentally, Fifth Edition is an extremely practical and useful tool for teachers. Chapters include information for varying grade levels. All chapters relate mathematics instruction to the NCTM content and process standards. Principles of a high quality mathematics program (equity, curriculum, teaching, learning, assessment and technology) are presented throughout. Great suggestions for manipulatives and alternative ways to assist student's understanding of the concepts. This text helps the teacher make math "real world" and better yet, fun! 5 stars (a must have for any elementary - middle school math teacher) - This book has not only taught me to teach math effectively but it has changed the way I understand mathematic concepts as well. I was taught math walking step by step through each chapter in a text book, learning skills and not concepts, learning algorithms rather than developing logical reasoning strategies. Van De Walle has suited me as a textbook for myself and a resource for curriculum planning in my sixth grade math class. I am so thankful to have stumbled into this text - it has been a life saver! 5 stars (Must have!) - If you learned math from traditional methods or algorithms, you must read this book. Math today is so different from how I learned it. This book explains how and why math has changed so much. I recommend it to teachers and parents alike. The author explains how to teach math using problem-solving. The method makes so much more sense than traditional mathematics. The book is filled with activities for every math concept and age that are easy to find, read, and use without much prep or prop. It also has ideas and resources for including literature and technology into math class. I find it highly valuable as a 3rd year teacher of fifth grade.
